Fruitvale death being investigated as homicide

The death of a man whose body was found Monday inside a Fruitvale apartment was a homicide, the Mesa County Sheriff’s Department said Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the Mesa County Coroner’s Office has not released the man’s identity or disclosed how he died.

The finding of the body was reported at 6:20 a.m. Monday in Unit 6 at Diamond Terrace apartments, 540 29 Road. Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Matt Lewis said evidence recovered at the apartment suggests the deceased man may have known the suspect. Lewis declined to elaborate.

Lewis said they believe the victim lived at the apartment where he was found, but he did not specify if others lived there.

A neighbor from a nearby unit at the apartment complex called 911 to report the body, but Lewis declined to explain circumstances that led to the 911 call.

Through Wednesday, a suspect had not been identified, Lewis said.

The Sheriff’s Department asked anyone who has information regarding the man’s death to call investigator Peter Burg at 970-244-3263, or Mesa County Crime Stoppers, 970-241-STOP.
