Game 3: Spartanburg Methodist 19, Walters State 11

Shell McCain went 4 for 5 and drove in three runs and threw out the potential tying run to help top-ranked Spartanburg Methodist out-slug Walters State (Tenn.) 19-11 in the third game of the Alpine Bank Junior College World Series.

With the Pioneers leading 10-9 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Jake Farr was on second base after a leadoff double. With two out, Jared Allen singled to left field and Farr attempted to score, but a perfect throw from McCain got him at the plate.

The teams combined for 36 hits, 18 apiece, and only Reid Moman didn’t score for the Pioneers (46-13, 1-0 JUCO). Allen went 6 for 6, drove in four runs and scored three for the Senators (37-17, 0-1), who play at 2 Sunday afternoon in an elimination game against the loser of tonight’s game between Navarro (Texas) College and Connors State (Okla.) College.

Spartanburg has Sunday off, facing the Game 4 winner at 2 p.m. Monday.
