Garfield authorities end search for body

Garfield County crews Thursday concluded a search mission after a second day of scouring the Colorado River following reports Wednesday of one or more people being seen in the river.

Garfield County Search and Rescue and Sheriff’s Department deputies used two boats to search from the No Name rest area east of Glenwood Springs to New Castle from noon to 3 p.m. Thursday.

Authorities decided to end the search because they had no more information or evidence to warrant continuing it.

The search started Wednesday after a caller told authorities she thought she saw someone in the river just east of the No Name rest area. Sheriff’s Department spokesman Phil Strouse said a second witness Wednesday reported seeing one or two people in the river.

No missing-person reports have been filed in the area, and deputies said no other evidence has been found to suggest someone is missing, such as capsized vessels, abandoned fishing gear, or unattended vehicles or associated campsites.
