Geer to play in final college game, eyed by NFL

Riar Geer’s football career at the University of Colorado is over, but the Fruita Monument High School graduate will get another opportunity to play a college game.

The senior tight end is invited to play in the East-West Shrine game Jan. 23 in Orlando, Fla. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. (MST) at the Florida Citrus Bowl. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN2.

Geer is currently in Naples, Fla., working out with a personal trainer in preparation for the game and upcoming scouting combines, his mother, Alison Geer said.

The Shrine game is the oldest all-star game, dating to 1925 and it benefits Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Geer finished his career at Colorado with 87 catches for 974 yards and 11 touchdowns. He caught a season-best 36 catches for 402 yards and four touchdowns in the 2009 season despite a 3-9 season for the Buffaloes.

The second-team All-Big 12 tight end is projected as a fullback in the National Football League, according to NFLDraftScout.com and is rated 14th out of 121 fullbacks eligible for the 2010 NFL draft.

Geer (6-foot-4, 250 pounds) is considered the best candidate from the Colorado 2009 senior class to continue his career in the NFL, the Boulder Daily Camera reported.

Geer was a quarterback at Fruita Monument High School.
