Giant boulders block section of US Highway 36

PINEWOOD SPRINGS — A blasting project that dumped huge boulders on U.S. Highway 36 between Lyons and Pinewood Springs has closed the highway.

Transportation officials say the car-size boulders will have to be broken up into smaller pieces and cleared from the road before the road can be repaired. Only one lane was open on Tuesday.

Monday’s scheduled blasting closure was the second of 20 different three-hour blasting operations that are part of the U.S. 36 Emergency Flood Reconstruction project between Lyons and Estes Park following September flooding.
