GJ Rockies select radio home

The Grand Junction Rockies are adapting to their new hometown, and they have a new radio home, too.

The Rockies and MBC Grand Broadcasting announced all 76 games will be broadcast on KJYE, 92.3-FM. MBC Grand also owns KTMM “The Team,” a sports-programming station that carries the Colorado Rockies games on 1340-AM.

Tim Ray, the general manager of the Grand Junction Rockies, said he’s still in negotiations with a play-by-play announcer and hopes to have that finished by March 1.

Jim Davis, the sports director at MBC Grand, said the commitment to his team calling all 76 games in an 81-day span, in addition to their other duties was too much to be the play-by-play voice. His local broadcast team will call a few home games.

Davis hosts a three-hour sports talk show Monday through Friday mornings on KTMM.

“We debated about it quite a bit. All of us would love to do it, it would be great to call minor league baseball, but with all the other obligations with our show and getting into high school (football) season, it would be tough,” Davis said.

Instead, they will have a Rockies segment on the morning talk show on KTMM Monday through Friday during the season, talking with manager Tony Diaz and players every day.

The KJYE signal will carry into Montrose, Rifle, Delta and Moab, Utah, and all games will also be available at http://www.gjrockies.com.

“We’re appreciative of their commitment to our organization,” Ray said. “In the end, our fans win. Having all of our games, home and away, on the radio is huge.”

The Grand Junction Rockies have sold more than 700 season tickets, Ray said Thursday, with “Seat Selection Sunday” a little more than one week away.

Season ticket holders can select their seats by priority number starting at 1 p.m. on Feb. 26 at Two Rivers Convention Center. If a season ticket holder cannot attend, he or she needs to have a representative at the event to select seats.

And those fans will be able to buy the first GJ Rockies merchandise.

“We want to give our season ticket holders first crack in appreciation of the commitment they’ve made,” Ray said.

Fans can buy season tickets by calling the Rockies office at 255-ROCK or going towww.gjrockies.com. Season tickets are $299 for all 38 home games.
