GJ Rox lose at Helena despite stellar bullpen
Two runs in the first inning and another in the bottom of the third proved too much for the Grand Junction Rockies to overcome on Saturday as they dropped the opener of the first season series against Helena 3-2.
Helena right fielder Michael Ratterree hit a two-run, one-out home run in the first inning and Taylor Brennan added a solo shot in the third inning.
Blake Shouse fell to 0-3 after the loss, and was pulled after 2 2/3 innings. The Rockies’ bullpen combined for 6 1/3 scoreless innings.
Juan Santiago picked up the win in relief for the Brewers, walking three but striking out two in a shutout appearance.
Miguel Dilone tripled for the Rockies, his first of the season, the only extra base hit of the game for Grand Junction.
Errors once again factored in, as the Rockies collected three errors, including two fielding errors by Dilone. It’s the Rockies’ third straight game with at least three errors.
With the loss, the Rockies fall to 1-9 in the past 10 games. The team has been in freefall since clinching a playoff bid by winning the first half title in the Pioneer League South.
Grand Junction is 4-13 in the second half of the season, and is six games behind South Division-leading Idaho Falls.
