GJ the favorite in 5A tennis regional

The CHSAA Class 5A Region 5 tennis tournament starts today and finishes Friday at Colorado Mesa University’s Elliott Tennis Center.

Grand Junction High School, which won the Southwestern League title, has a bye in the first round of all seven flights, which begin at 8 a.m. Semifinals are scheduled to begin between
11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. today.

Finals in all positions are 9:15 a.m. on Friday.

The tournament also includes Central, Fruita Monument, Dakota Ridge, Heritage, ThunderRidge and Cherokee Trail.

Grand Junction senior Spencer Weinberg, who placed first in state as a sophomore and second as a junior at No. 1 singles, is looking to make another state run. After not playing tennis for six months as he rehabilitated from tendinitis in his right wrist, Weinberg is 100 percent, Tigers coach Carol Elliott said.

“He’s feeling good, feeling confident and ready to help the team,” Elliott said. “His wrist is a lot better and hasn’t been causing him any problems.”

For local teams such as Fruita, there is a benefit to having played the Tigers throughout the season.

“Junction is a top three, four, five team in the state for sure,” Fruita coach Clint Davis said. “And they absolutely are the class of the region. We’re not going to be intimidated by the schools coming over (from the Front Range) because we’ve seen that competition from Junction.”

Davis said a key matchup to look for today is in the first round of No. 2 singles, where the Wildcats’ Matt Harris plays Central’s Drake Giese.

“That’ll be a huge test right away for these kids,” Davis said.

The top two placers in each position qualify for the Class 5A state tennis tournament Oct. 11–13 at Gates Tennis Center in Denver.
