GJ gift store seized for tax payment

The state of Colorado has seized Goodies and Gifts, 484 28 Road, for failing to forward sales tax revenue to the state and city of Grand Junction on time.

The food and novelties store received notice Thursday that the state would immediately take possession of the property. The store owes the state $2,831.15 in sales tax and owes the city of Grand Junction $1,848.09 in sales tax, according to Colorado Department of Revenue spokesman Mark Couch.

Couch said he did not know how long Goodies and Gifts had owed the state or city money. Typically, taxes are owed for about a year before a property is seized, Couch said.

A sign posted in the window of the store stated, “All personal property, furniture, fixtures, equipment and inventory owned by or used in the conduct of business” will be sold at auction in order to pay the tax amounts at 11 a.m. on Dec. 16.

The owner of Goodies and Gifts, Cynthia Rodriguez, has until the auction time to pay the city and state a total of $4,679.24.

The lights were on in the store Monday afternoon, but no one could be seen from the windows. No one answered the phone at the location either.
