UPDATED: Florida man killed, GJ man arrested

UPDATED 6:22 p.m. A 25-year-old Grand Junction man was arrested today on suspicion of first-degree murder for allegedly stabbing and killing a man this morning on Orchard Mesa.

Lee McDonald was booked into Mesa County Jail. No booking photo was released as the investigation continues, the Grand Junction Police Department said.


UPDATED 4:20 p.m. A 27-year-old man from North Miami, Florida, was killed in an early morning stabbing on Orchard Mesa.

Nicholas Allen Potts died of multiple stab wounds and his death was ruled a homicide, the Mesa County Coroner said this afternoon.

A suspect has been taken into custody, but his name and the charges he may be facing have not been released from the Grand Junction Police Department.

Shortly after 4 a.m. today, officers were dispatched to 1254 Santa Clara Avenue after Potts died in the front yard.

The initial investigation showed Potts was stabbed on nearby Christopher Court. He fled from the suspect, knocking on doors trying to get help before dying about a block away at the end of Santa Clara Avenue near the intersection with Pinon Street, the Police Department said.


UPDATED 9:15 a.m. One man is dead today from apparent stab wounds in what was initially called a homicide on Orchard Mesa, the Grand Junction Police Department said.

The victim’s name and cause of death have not been officially released. A suspect is in custody with charges pending, but his name is not being released at this time, the Police Department said.

The incident reportedly started in the area of Christopher Court and Santa Clara Avenue at approximately 4 a.m. today, when the victim was assaulted.

He reportedly ran through the neighborhood knocking on doors to get help as the suspect followed him. The victim ended up in the front yard of 1254 Santa Clara Ave., where he died, the Police Department said.

Few details are being released this morning after the Grand Junction Police Department were called to the 1200 block of Santa Clara Avenue shortly after 4 a.m. today on the report of a homicide.

At this point, Police Department spokeswoman Kate Porras said all she could confirm was one person was killed outside and officers are not looking for suspects.

Much of the block was taped off this morning as the investigation continues.
