GJ’s Trujillo triumphs over Wildcat Rodriguez for title
Two School District 51 super sophomores met in the Class 5A Colorado High School State Wrestling Championships 145-pound state title match.
Undefeated and top ranked Jacob Trujillo of Grand Junction High school defeated Fruita Monument High School’s Isaac Rodriguez, 28-6, ranked No. 4 by On the Mat, by a score of 10-4.
Trujillo had defeated Rodriguez twice this season by 4-1 and 7-3 scores.
Trujillo, only a sophomore, finishes this season with a record of 46-0 and now has a career mark of 82-3.
Trujillo’s only career losses have been to Pueblo South state champion Robert DeHerrera at the 2011 Warrior Classic, 7-6, and twice to P.T. Garcia, a two-time state champion from Bear Creek. Garcia pinned Trujillo at the 2012 Arvada West Invitational in 3:30 and last year in the 120-pound state title match, 9-1.
The last time two District 51 wrestlers met for a state title was 1992 when Grand Junction’s Richard Valdez defeated Fruita Monument’s Lucas Archuleta 3-1 for the Class 5A 130-pound title at McNichols Arena. Both were seniors.
The Colorado State Wrestling Championships were held in Denver at the Pepsi Center.
