Gov. orders flags lowered for Scott Carpenter

DENVER — Gov. John Hickenlooper has ordered that flags at all state public buildings be flown at half-staff Saturday in honor of Scott Carpenter, the second American to orbit the Earth.

The funeral service for Carpenter is Saturday in Boulder, his birthplace.

Hickenlooper said Carpenter was “a great Coloradan and great American” and called him “a pure Westerner.”

Carpenter died Oct. 10 at the age of 88 in a Denver hospice from complications from a September stroke.
