Grand County sheriff says $500,000 missing

HOT SULPHUR SPRINGS, Colo. — The Grand County sheriff says a criminal investigation is under way after more than $500,000 was discovered missing from the county building department.

Sheriff Rod Johnson says the money is missing from over a period of 12 years. He says no arrests have been made, but one person has been fired from the building department. No charges have been filed.

According to KUSA-TV (http://tinyurl.com/p7tmnek ), the sheriff blames bad record-keeping and he says the case may never be fully resolved.

County Commissioner James Newberry says safeguards the county thought were in place didn’t work. County Manager Lurline Underbrink-Curran says new policies have been put in place to make sure no person is ever handling money unchecked.
