Grand Junction ranked No. 5 in the Denver Post preseason football poll
Grand Junction High School caught the attention of the state last season with its run to the Class 5A football state quarterfinals.
The Tigers, with 14 returning starters, are ranked fifth in the Denver Post preseason media poll, released Monday.
A total of 30 media members from around the state, including The Daily Sentinel, voted in the classifications they cover.
Defending state champion Mullen, which received all 15 first-place votes, is ranked first. Regis is ranked second, Grandview is third and Cherokee Trail is fourth.
Palisade received one first-place vote, but is ranked eighth in the Class 3A poll.
Defending champion Elizabeth is ranked first with 11 first-place votes. Vista Ridge is second and Glenwood Springs is third.
Valor Christian is ranked No. 1 in Class 4A with 12 first-place votes. Wheat Ridge is second with one first-place vote.
Defending Class 2A state champion Olathe is ranked third with two first-place votes. Florence edged out Brush for the top spot. Five teams each received at least one first-place vote.
Aspen is ranked sixth. Coal Ridge and Basalt each received votes.
Hotchkiss is ranked third in Class 1A and Paonia is sixth. Burlington grabbed the top spot with seven first-place votes.
In 8-man, Norwood is ranked sixth. Hoehne is first and Caliche is second.
