Grand Mesa in line to be picked nation’s top natural wonder

If Internet voting goes the way Barb Bowman wishes, Grand Mesa will be selected the top natural wonder in the United States.

Web site AOL Travel is promoting National Tourism Week, May 8 to 16, with slide shows and online polls to give the world a voice for top American travel destinations.

Online voting can be accessed at http://news.travel.aol.com/explore-america/natural-wonders. No deadline or limitations on the number of times someone may vote is listed on the site.

As division manager of the Grand Junction Visitor & Convention Bureau, Bowman was responsible for submitting Grand Mesa for consideration in AOL’s poll.

She and her colleagues found out Wednesday afternoon that Grand Mesa was a finalist.

“It’s the largest flattop mountain in the world,” Bowman said. “No one else can say that.”

AOL has given people the chance to vote in six “wonders” categories: natural (Grand Mesa’s category), architectural, historical, water, wildlife and unusual.

Some people may agree or disagree with the lists AOL has pulled together from tourism bureaus across the country. But no one can dispute Grand Mesa’s tourism appeal, Bowman said.

“Grand Mesa is an incredible thing,” she said. “It is an attraction.”
