Grandma resists her would-be robber, who runs away

Deanna Morrison did what any other 66-year-old ranch-raised cowgirl would have done.

She pushed back.

“I just looked at him and said, ‘You’re not getting my purse,’ ” said Morrison, counting her blessings several hours after fighting off a would-be purse snatcher at gunpoint outside Two Rivers Convention Center on Friday. “You just learn to take care of yourself when you’re out in the country.”

Morrison, a Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Colorado employee of five years, pulled into the convention center around 10:30 a.m. on Friday to help decorate for the hospice’s annual volunteer appreciation dinner that night.

She said she was walking from her car to the front of the building when she felt something wasn’t right. It was over her shoulder.

“A young man was there about 10 feet behind me ... I walked faster ... he walked faster,” she said.

She turned to say good morning.

“Morning,” he replied.

The man then pointed a gun, Morrison said.

“We were up two steps (to the convention center) when I saw him cock the pistol,” she said.

“Give me your purse, or I’ll (expletive) shoot you,” Morrison said of the man’s instructions.

No thanks.

“He tried yanking on the strap,” she said. “I just braced myself and pushed at him.”

When the struggle knocked her down to a knee, she said she looked him in the eye and said, “You idiot.”

The failed robber ran away. Police said he fled in a 1980s Ford Taurus.

Raised on a Wyoming ranch in the Snake River Valley, Morrison said, “We just learn to cope with things.”

“Young women just need to be aware of their surroundings,” she said. “I’m very grateful it wasn’t one of our (Hospice) volunteers.”

The suspect was described by police as a Hispanic male, about 20 to 25 years old, 5 feet 9 inches tall, with short black hair. He was last seen wearing a black T-shirt and khaki shorts.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call police at 242-6707.
