Ground turkey recall hits Walmart, City Market stores

Western Colorado Walmart and City Market shoppers who recently purchased ground turkey may want to check their refrigerators or freezers because the meat could be contaminated with salmonella.

Cargill Inc. announced this week a recall of roughly 185,000 pounds of ground turkey products after a test showed salmonella in a sample from the same Arkansas plant tied to a recall issued last month.

The recall covers trays of ground meat, patties and chubs that were sold nationwide under the Kroger, Fresh HEB and Honeysuckle White brands. It covers 16-, 19.2- and 48-ounce containers with use or freeze by dates ranging from Sept. 10 to Sept. 21.

The products subject to recall bear the establishment number “P-963” inside the U.S. Department of Agriculture mark of inspection. The products were produced on Aug. 23, 24, 30 and 31, according to the USDA.

City Market customers who may have purchased one of the products received notification of the recall via a receipt if they shopped at the store since buying the meat.

City Market spokeswoman Kelli McGannon said shoppers can return the turkey to the store where they purchased it for a full refund.

This week’s recall follows one Cargill issued Aug. 3 for 36 million pounds of ground turkey. That recall followed a salmonella outbreak that federal health officials said had sickened 107 people in 31 states, killing one person.

Government officials say even contaminated ground turkey is safe to eat if it’s cooked to 165 degrees. They say it’s also important that people wash their hands with soap for at least 20 seconds before and after handling raw meat.

The most common symptoms of salmonella are diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever within 6 to 72 hours of eating a contaminated product, according to the USDA.
