Higher releases on tap on the Gunnison River

The Bureau of Reclamation has announced higher releases starting Dec. 1 from the Aspinall Unit dams on the Gunnison River.

The increases are designed to meet a Dec. 31 target elevation at Blue Mesa Reservoir as well as meet winter demands for hydropower.

Water levels in the Black Canyon and Gunnison Gorge will increase about 400 cubic feet per second, raising river levels to around 900 cfs.

Officials said flows should remain around 900 cfs for the remainder of the winter.
