Homeless man to fight roadside eviction

PUEBLO — A Pueblo attorney is fighting an order from the Colorado Department of Transportation trying to force a homeless man off a state highway right of way.

Attorney Matt Martin says 53-year-old Roy Gleiter and his 73-year-old companion, Debra Cowden, have a right to camp near the road east of Pueblo.

According to the Pueblo Chieftain, Gleiter was given three days Thursday to get off the right of way and stay off.

The department accuses Gleiter of trespass and being a nuisance. Gleiter says he lost his home in Gulfport, Miss., to Hurricane Katrina. He says he is heading to the West Coast pulling a wagon to protest American greed.
