Hotchkiss advances to Final Four

All season long, the Hotchkiss High School baseball team has talked about keys to success.

After losing the first game in the Class 3A double-elimination State Championship Series, the theme changed a bit.

“We’re on the theme of keys to success,” Hotchkiss coach Jason Yantzer said. “We enhanced it a bit the last couple days with tenacity, true grit and belief. We’re rolling on those factors.”

The Bulldogs (21-3) toughened up Monday, defeating Olathe 5-1, then eliminating Lamar 4-1 at Butch Butler Field in Greeley to advance to this weekend’s Final Four. Hotchkiss plays Eaton or Faith Christian at noon Friday at Jackson Field in Greeley.

Three Hotchkiss pitchers combined to throw a pair of three-hitters.

“We didn’t even go to two guys we could’ve gone to today,” Yantzer said. “We had Jacobe Galley warming up in the bullpen. It was a stellar performance from all three. They did a nice job of keeping hitters off-balance. The breaking ball was breaking like we haven’t seen in a long time. Defensively, we played lights-out.”

Cesar Macias pitched a complete-game three-hitter in the 4-1 win against Lamar.

The senior (9-3) allowed five walks, but struck out four.

Hotchkiss scored two runs in the third inning on Ryan Spor’s two-run double for a 2-1 lead.

Dylan Ware hit a two-run home run in the fifth.

Jamie Rodriguez and Edgar Macias limited Olathe to one run on three hits in a 5-1 victory earlier Monday.

Hotchkiss broke a 1-1 tie with one run in the third and added three more late.

Rodriguez hit a solo home run in the fifth. The Macias brothers each doubled and Dakota Coats tripled.

“We couldn’t get anything going offensively,” Olathe coach Darren Sofka said. “We’d get a hit, but we couldn’t string anything together.”

The Pirates (13-10) had two runners on base and one out once, but couldn’t score and were eliminated.

Cody Harrison took the loss for Olathe.
