Injured trooper to undergo more surgery

A trooper injured in a shooting in Glenwood Canyon Thursday will undergo additional surgery today.

“I want to let you know that Trooper (Eugene) Hofacker is awake this morning and communicating with us. He is in good spirits as he prepares for additional surgery today. Please keep Eugene and his family in your thoughts and prayers,” Colonel Scott Hernandez, chief of the Colorado State Patrol, said in a news release.

Hofacker, 31, was described by Hernandez Thursday as being in critical but stable condition after initial surgery at Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs.

The six-year State Patrol veteran was shot when he approached the driver of a pulled-over vehicle on Interstate 70 in eastern Glenwood Canyon. A second trooper shot and killed the suspect.
