Jonathan Gray heading to GJ

Jonathan Gray, the first-round draft pick (third overall) of the Colorado Rockies, signed his professional contract today in Denver and confirmed he will begin the season in Grand Junction.

There had been speculation that Gray, a hard-throwing right-handed pitcher from the University of Oklahoma, would start the season in Class A ball, possibly as high as Modesto, the Rockies Class A Advanced club. He could be evaluated early this season in Grand Junction by the Rockies’ player development staff and possibly move up during the season.

Last season, the Rockies sent several high draft picks to Rookie ball, including first-rounders David Dahl and Eddie Butler, and it paid off with the Rookie team’s first playoff appearance in 11 years.

The GJ Rockies open training camp Friday afternoon at Suplizio Field, with their home opener on June 20.
