JUCO Committee receives $7,500 grant from El Pomar

The Grand Junction Baseball Committee received $7,500 on Wednesday night as a finalist for the El Pomar Foundation Awards for Excellence at a banquet in Colorado Springs.

The committee, better known as the JUCO Committee, was one of three finalists recognized by the El Pomar Foundation in the Sports & Recreation category.

“We’ll look to see if there is something we can establish with it,” JUCO Chairman Jamie Hamilton said Wednesday night after receiving the award. “We work hard to raise money. This is a nice gift. We’ll find a way to utilize it. It was a nice event.”

This is the first time the JUCO Committee received an award from the El Pomar Foundation in the Sports & Recreation category, Hamilton said. The committee received a plaque from the foundation for youth activities several years ago.

More than 80 members serve on the JUCO Committee, which hosts the Alpine Bank Junior College World Series.

More than 500 local volunteers help with selling tickets, hosting teams, operating the scoreboard and other details.

In addition to the local volunteers, the committee helps the youth of Grand Junction through 3,000 donated single-game tickets and free baseball clinics with JUCO players. More than 125,000 fans attended the 2007 tournament, the 50th anniversary of the event.

The JUCO Committee was one of 33 nonprofit organizations to receive an award by the foundation this year in 11 different categories.

The awards for excellence program was established in 1989 to reward Colorado nonprofit organizations, businesses and individuals that serve their communities with distinction and excellence.

Honorees do not apply for the awards, but are nominated and selected by the Awards for Excellence Selection Committee.

The JUCO Committee was nominated by El Pomar Foundation Commissioner Emeritus Tilman Bishop.

JUCO Vice Chairman Bruce Hill provided the foundation with information about the JUCO World Series.
