A former Grand Junction man who slipped his now ex-girlfriend pills that caused her to lose the fetus was sentenced this morning to five years in prison.

Mesa County District Court Judge Thomas Deister said he had to balance several factors when determining the open sentence for 32-year-old, Jared Ahlstrom.

One one hand Ahlstrom confessed to his then ex-girlfriend about secretly slipping her pills that caused her to lose the fetus. Ahlstrom also expressed his deep remorse about the incidents that occurred two years ago. However, Deister said, he thought a prison sentence is warranted to deter others from thinking they could do similar actions and not face prison time.

“People cannot be allowed to think they can terminate pregnancies without the consent of the mom,” Deister said.

Ahlstrom was sentenced today after pleading guilty previously to the single felony charge of unlawful termination of a pregnancy.
