Junction cancels pyrotechnics show

The Fourth of July will be a lot quieter and less sparkly in Grand Junction this year after city officials decided Friday to cancel the annual fireworks display.

The move was prompted by the high fire danger and the severity of the Pine Ridge Fire burning on about 12,000 acres near De Beque. Grand Junction was one of the last cities on the Western Slope that had planned on having fireworks July 4 before council members said they would support canceling the event.

“We have not canceled the holiday, we have canceled fireworks,” city spokeswoman Sam Rainguet said.

In addition, Grand Junction has enacted a ban on the sale of fireworks in city limits. A Mesa County-wide fire ban also includes no lighting off fireworks, firing up charcoal grills and even smoking cigarettes outdoors.

The Bookcliff Country Club had planned a fireworks display on July 4, but that, too, has been canceled by order of the Mesa County Sheriff’s Department.

Rainguet said it’s unclear when the city last had to cancel its July 4 firework display because of fire danger. The city’s firework vendor, Fireworks West International, has agreed to work with the city to reschedule the display after the threat of fire danger subsides.
