Kiwanis Club giving $37,500 to charities

The Kiwanis Club of Grand Junction is giving away $37,500 to 25 local charities today.

The club annually gives to local groups, but particularly those that benefit young children. Through its Key Club, the group also gives scholarships to area high school students seeking to go to college.

This year’s funds stem from the club’s major fundraising events, such as its Oct. 2 Oktoberfest in downtown Grand Junction, and the annual Kiwanis Pancake Day.

The group is to give the money away at a noon luncheon at Two Rivers Convention Center, located at First and Main streets.

This year’s award recipients are:

$500 — St. Mary’s Foster Grandparent Program.

$1,000 — Clifton Christian Church: Food and Clothing Program; Early Childhood Connections Crisis Fund; Fruita Thrift Shop; Girls on the Run; GJ Imagination Library; How are the Children?; Kids Voting; and Western Slope Center for Children.

$1,200 — Grand Valley Catholic Outreach.

$1,250 — Boy Scouts of America Western Colorado Council.

$1,500 — Community Food Bank; Counseling and Education Center; and Hospice & Palliative Care of Western Colorado.
