Large wildfire in S. Colorado 50 percent contained

LA JUNTA — A wildfire that has burned about 40 square miles in southern Colorado is roughly 50 percent contained.

The fire is one of two burning on Fort Carson’s Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site. A 6,500-acre blaze also on the remote site is 30 percent contained.

The residents of several homes evacuated are expected to return home this morning.

A third wildfire has charred up to 17,000 acres south of La Junta and another one has burned 2,500 acres in the area.

All the fires started Tuesday, possibly by lightning.

About 100 firefighters are battling a wildfire near Cripple Creek that has forced the evacuations of roughly 100 homes Wednesday night. The fire has scorched 50 acres, but hasn’t burned any structures.
