Latest poll shows Buck ahead of Norton

Ken Buck’s campaign for the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate got a boost from a poll that showed him well ahead of Jane Norton.

A Denver Post/9News poll released Sunday showed Buck favored by 53 percent of likely Republican primary voters to 37 percent for Norton.

The same poll showed a similar breakdown among likely Democratic primary voters, with 53 percent favoring Sen. Michael Bennet and 36 percent former state House Speaker Andrew Romanoff.

Norton, a Grand Junction native, also faces a challenge of her place on the ballot by a Grand Junction man, Tom Bjorklund, who filed suit in Denver District Court challenging her placement on the ballot.

The suit questions the legal ability of Norton circulators to collect petitions.

Norton turned in 33,000 signatures to get on the ballot. Buck qualified with the votes of 76 percent of delegates to the GOP state convention last month.

Norton actually will be a bystander in the suit, which names Secretary of State Bernie Buescher as the defendant.

“This lawsuit is frivolous, completely without merit, and a waste of taxpayers’ money,” Norton campaign manager Josh Penry said.

“This lawsuit is nothing more than a typical attempt to deny the voters of Colorado their best choice for U.S. senator in Jane Norton.”

Norton’s name will appear on the ballot unless a court orders otherwise because the Secretary of State’s Office certified her candidacy.

No trial date was set by Monday.

State law requires that county clerks have all printed ballots in their possession by July 9, the Secretary of State’s Office said.

In the poll, 747 likely GOP voters and 506 likely primary voters were interviewed.

The margin of error was 3.7 percent plus or minus in the GOP race, 4.4 percent plus or minus in the Democrat race.
