Local Briefs: Mesa’s Wright honored by RMAC

Wright RMAC defensive standout

Colorado Mesa defensive end Connor Wright is the RMAC co-defensive player of the week.

The senior from Wheat Ridge set RMAC and Mesa records with six sacks and 7.5 tackles for a loss in the Mavericks’ 52-30 victory over Dixie State College.

Wright had a game-high 12 tackles, including 11 solo, two quarterback hurries and one pass breakup. He leads the team in total tackles (23), solo tackles (14), sacks (6) and tackles for a loss (9).

Mesa (1-1) hosts 11th-ranked Nebraska-Kearney at noon Saturday at Stocker Stadium.

Pitre RMAC player of the week

Palisade High School graduate Bernadette Pitre is the RMAC offensive player of the week.

The CSU-Pueblo senior made the Dallas Baptist Patriot Classic All-Tournament team after leading the ThunderWolves to a 3-1 record in the tournament.

She had 48 kills and a .420 hitting percentage in the tournament. She had three matches of double digit kills and is currently the RMAC leader in hit percentage with .430.

Bingaman leads Peaks Classic

Colorado Mesa University’s Brandon Bingaman shot rounds of 72 and 69 on Monday to lead the Peaks Classic tournament in La Veta with a two-round score of 141. Bradley Sinnett of Wayland Baptist is second at 142.

Mesa is fifth as a team at 608; Wayland Baptist is at 580.

Michelle Strip shot an 80 and is tied for 15th in the women’s CCU Fall Invitational in Littleton. Colorado Mesa is sixth in the team standings at 328.

Prep Golf

Kinnaman fifth in Durango Invite

Grand Junction High School freshman Donny Kinnaman is in fifth place with a score of 76 in the two-day Durango Invitational at Hillcrest Golf Course.

Durango’s Morgan Miller won the first round Monday with a two-over-par 73. Montrose’s Bryce Markley is sixth with a 77. Teammates Kolton Kyne and Josh Derosia are tied for 10th at 80.

Montezuma-Cortez leads the team race with 226. Durango is second with 227, Grand Junction is third with 236 and Montrose is fourth with 237. Palisade is sixth with 255 and Central is eighth with 260.

The Durango Invitational continues today at Dalton Ranch Golf Club.

Palisade secretary receives honor

Palisade athletics secretary Maria Millard is the IBM Colorado High School Hero of the Week, as selected by the Colorado High School Activities Association.

The program is designed to recognize individuals who excel in supporting athletics, coaches, parents and their schools through their involvement in high school activities.

Millard will be recognized at a reception hosted by IBM and the Denver Broncos at Sports Authority Field at Mile High later this year.
