Man arrested in Fruitvale shooting
The Mesa County Sheriff’s Department today said an 18-year-old man has been arrested in connection with Monday’s shooting at Racquet Club apartments.
Julio Castro Quinones, of Grand Junction, was booked at the Mesa County Jail on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder and first-degree assault, the agency said in a release. The investigation continues and more arrests are possible, Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Heather Benjamin said.
An arrest warrant affidavit in the case has been filed under seal. The Sheriff’s Department did not release a booking photo.
Quinones was being with without bond.
Phillip Burchim, 34, was shot in the chest just after 11 p.m. Monday, and told investigators from his hospital bed that same night that he knew his assailant only as “Payaso,” a Sureno gang member from Los Angeles who was among a group of people interested in selling marijuana before shots rang out at the apartment complex located 2915 Orchard Ave., according to a search warrant affidavit filed in the case. The Daily Sentinel reported the contents of the search warrant in this morning’s paper.
Burchim was listed in fair condition Tuesday.
Several witnesses told investigators they heard a loud commotion on the northeast side of the apartment complex, before they either heard or saw flashes from three to four gunshots coming from a second-story balcony on the northeast corner, the affidavit said. The affidavit said approximately four men were seen fleeing the area in a dark-colored sedan.
