Man arrested in March shooting of son-in-law

A man suspected in the murder of his son-in-law in Rifle in March has been arrested in Oregon.

Rifle police said today that Michael Montgomery was arrested Monday in Ontario, Oregon near the Idaho border, in connection with the murder of Christopher Gallegos.

“Montgomery was arrested after leaving a church that provides meals to the needy. He apparently established a campsite near the Snake River and visited town on occasion,” police said in their release.

The Ontario Police Department and the High Desert Drug Task Force made the arrest, and Montgomery is being held in the Malheur County Jail.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit, Montgomery, 45, shot and killed Gallegos, 28, on March 29 after Gallegos intervened on behalf of a friend during an altercation.

Gallegos was found dead at the bottom of steps at an apartment building at 2673 Acacia Ave. The affidavit said he had been shot in the head.
