Man charged in Fruita slaying pleads not guilty

A Fruita man charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of his roommate pleaded not guilty this morning.

Wayne Gert, 37, was scheduled for an eight-day trial before District Judge Thomas Deister starting Feb. 28. Gert was arrested after calling 911 to report the shooting of Henry Trisler Jr., 37, who was slain May 21 in a mobile home rented by Gert.

Gert has claimed self-defense, telling authorities that Trisler, who was unarmed, allegedly approached him in threatening manner.

Aside from the second-degree murder count, Gert is also charged with menacing, prohibited use of a weapon and possession of an explosive or incendiary devise. He’s being held at the Mesa County Jail on $300,000 bond.
