A Grand Junction man was arrested this morning after pointing a toy handgun at a police officer and demanding money, the Grand Junction Police Department said today.

Patricio Preciado, 29, was arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery and felony menacing after an encounter just after midnight in the 500 block of Main Street. Preciado was standing in a breezeway when approached by the officer, who was in full uniform.

Preciado allegedly pointed a black handgun in the officer’s face and said, “give me your money,” police said in a release. The officer drew his handgun, before Preciado smiled, “held up his gun, saying he was just kidding” and the gun was fake.

Police said Preciado’s posture, tone of voice and the toy’s appearance led the officer to believe his life was in danger.
