Man killed by Fruita police identified

The Mesa County Coroner’s Office has completed its examination and identified the man who was shot and killed by Fruita police early Saturday morning.

Lewis Pollard, 61, of Fruita, was stopped by police at 12:40 a.m. Saturday, according to Fruita Police Chief Mark Angelo. Pollard allegedly tried to flee the scene and was shot by police. The cause of his death was multiple gunshot wounds.

Significant questions remain about the incident including whether Pollard was armed, why he was stopped by police, and if he posed a threat to officers or the the public. The incident is being investigated by the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office.
