Man killed on ATV in accident near Gateway

A man was struck and killed by a car this morning as the man crossed Highway 141 riding an all-terrain vehicle, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

State Patrol Sgt. John Hahn said Mark Miller, 51, was on a 6-wheel John Deere Gator, attempting to cross the highway roughly two miles south of Gateway, when the ATV was struck broadside by a Buick Regal driven by 57-year-old Curt Carver of Nucla. Miller was thrown from the ATV and pronounced dead at the scene.

Speed, drugs and alcohol are not suspected factors, Hahn said. The stretch of highway is posted for a speed limit of 55 mph.

Hahn said there was no evidence at the scene that the Buick braked or tried to dodge the ATV.

“It sounds like they didn’t see each other,” Hahn said.

The crash remains under investigation.
