Man suspected of shooting friend in Paonia
A Paonia man was arrested Monday night on suspicion of shooting his friend with a shotgun during an alcohol-fueled altercation, according to the Delta County Sheriff’s Department.
Galen Forrester Wood, 31, is being held on suspicion of first-degree assault, felony menacing and illegal discharge of weapon, after Delta County authorities were called around 7:30 p.m. to a reported shooting near the Trading Post, in the Paonia area. Officers determined the shooting happened at 41225 Willow Road in Paonia.
Investigators believe Gregory Thompson, 34, was shot in the abdomen by Wood when Thompson refused to leave the Willow Road home, Delta County Undersheriff Mark Taylor said. Alcohol is a possible factor, Taylor said.
Wood allegedly used a .20 gauge shotgun. Thompson’s wound entered his abdomen and exited his back, Taylor said.
Thompson was flown to St. Mary’s Hospital, where he is recovering, the Sheriff’s Department said in a release.
Wood is being held at the Delta County Jail in lieu of $60,000 bond.
