Man accused in relationship with girl, 14

A Grand Junction man faces a possible felony charge on suspicion that he carried on a sexual relationship with an underage girl.

Christopher Scott Espinoza, 24, is being held at the Mesa County Jail on $25,000 bond.

Espinoza was arrested Sunday after a 14-year-old girl called police the day before and told an officer she had been dating Espinoza for four months. She told the officer they had protected sex on five occasions, according to an arrest affidavit.

Police on Friday released a heavily redacted version of Espinoza’s arrest affidavit.

When asked by the officer why she was just now reporting it, she said she realized it was a “bad idea” and had broken off the relationship on Jan. 30, the affidavit said.

Espinoza authored a letter to the girl, saying he might kill himself if she didn’t take him back, the affidavit said. The girl shared the letter with a neighbor, who encouraged her to report it to police, the affidavit said.

Officers found more letters written by Espinoza to the girl, which authorities said they believe were drafted after Espinoza was aware that police were investigating the matter, the affidavit said.
