Man fatally stabbed during fight, affidavit says

Two witnesses told police detectives that 20-year-old Ramon Sandoval didn’t appear “hurt that bad” after he was stabbed during an altercation near an Orchard Mesa apartment, according to an arrest affidavit.

Grand Junction police on Monday released a heavily redacted version of an arrest affidavit for Amy Ann Adamson Gonzalez, 19, who was booked into Mesa County Jail on Sunday on suspicion of second-degree murder and felony tampering with evidence.

Sandoval’s body was discovered around 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the parking lot of Monument Ridge Town Homes, 2680 B 1/2 Road.

One witness said the stabbing happened in front of an apartment unit where,  according to booking records, Adamson Gonzalez lives. The stabbing followed an argument and fight among Sandoval, Adamson Gonzalez and two other women. The names of the two women were redacted in the affidavit. The document does not suggest the nature of the dispute.

A witness said Adamson Gonzalez retrieved a knife from her apartment’s kitchen. Police have not recovered the weapon.

“(Witness) said Sandoval then left telling the others he had been stabbed,” the affidavit said. “(Witness) said it did not appear that Sandoval was hurt very bad.”

The affidavit doesn’t suggest how soon the stabbing occurred before discovery of Sandoval’s body.

An autopsy showed the knife damaged Sandoval’s aorta, causing internal bleeding, and that he died from the wound.

A second witness told detectives that Sandoval had been at her apartment unit, but denied seeing an altercation or stabbing. She acknowledged being “good friends” with Sandoval since middle school. She later acknowledged there was a fight, saying Adamson Gonzalez had stabbed him and he left the scene.

“(Witness) said she and Amy decided to tell police Sandoval had been there (apartment) but to leave out the altercation and stabbing,” the affidavit said.
