Man found dead in tent near river

The Mesa County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the death of a young man whose body was found Sunday inside a tent near the Colorado River.

Deputies were sent to an area adjacent to the Union Pacific Railroad bridge near the confluence of the Colorado and Gunnison rivers around 2:30 p.m. The area is commonly used as a transient camp.

“Nothing looks suspicious at this time, but they are actively investigating it,” sheriff’s spokeswoman Mary Gonzales said.

She said she didn’t know how the man was found.

Police radio traffic reports indicated the man was 21 years old, although Gonzales said she couldn’t confirm his age.

The Mesa County Coroner’s Office, which also responded to the scene, will identify the man and perform an autopsy to determine his cause of death.
