Manager of civic center, Avalon leaves post Monday

The general manager of Two Rivers Convention Center and The Avalon Theatre resigned Monday in an effort to reduce costs at Grand Junction’s civic center.

In a resignation letter to the city dated Nov. 8, Tim Seeberg said he was leaving because of anticipated budget reductions at the center and overall budget reductions to the city of Grand Junction. His resignation is effective Nov. 29, according to the letter.

Solid Waste and Streets Manager Darren Starr will run Two Rivers while the city searches for a new general manager, Grand Junction City Manager Laurie Kadrich said.

Seeberg started as the convention center’s general manager Nov. 16, 2005, and his current annual salary is $81,785, the city said.

The city expects to unfurl its best-case scenario budget model for 2011 after Amendments 60, 61 and Proposition 101 were rejected by voters earlier this month. However, the city continues to trim labor costs across all departments, and those costs are expected to run $35.3 million in 2011. That’s a reduction of $6.9 million in labor costs from 2009.

The operating budget for Two Rivers has been reduced, and about five staff positions have been cut this year.

Last year’s combined operating budget for Two Rivers, the Visitor & Convention Bureau and The Avalon Theatre was $4.4 million. In 2011, the city is planning an operating budget of $4.3 million for the three.

Seeberg helped Two Rivers upgrade its food quality and was an asset to the city, Kadrich said.

“He definitely brought a lot of energy and turned things around,” she said.

In the past couple years, the city has shuffled some employees to other areas to realize savings and asked employees to take on increased duties. A total of 82 employees have been laid off by the city as revenues and workloads have decreased in the past two years.
