Two Mesa wrestlers win region titles, five advance to nationals

Colorado Mesa wrestlers Nick Petersen and Paco Retana-Quinones won region titles and five Mavericks qualified for nationals at the NCAA Division II Super Regional 4 tournament in Hays, Kan.

Petersen defeated top seed Walker Clarke of Fort Hays State 4-3 in the 184-pound final. Retana-Quinones defeated top seed Justin Glenn of Fort Hays State 5-4 in overtime in the heavyweight final.

Mesa junior 157-pounder Jon Gappmaier and sophomore 165-pounder Dylan Granard placed second and qualified for nationals with redshirt freshman James Martinez, who placed fourth at 141 pounds.

The five national qualifiers are the most for Mesa since the program was reinstated six years ago.
