Mavericks defeat St. Mary’s in first round of regional

Colorado Mesa hit two home runs and Matt Williams pitched a complete game to lead the Mavericks to a 6-2 victory over St. Mary’s (Texas) University in the first round of the NCAA South Central Regional in Kingsville, Texas.

Justin Rosales hit a three-run home run and Nate Robertson hit a solo shot in the fourth inning off St. Mary’s starter Rene Solis.

Williams overcame a rough start, giving up two runs in the first inning to pitch a complete game. He limited the Rattlers to eight hits, four walks and struck out eight.

The Mavericks (45-9) play St. Edward’s (Texas) in a winners’ bracket game at 6 p.m. (MDT) Friday.

The region champion advances to the NCAA Division II World Series, May 25-June 1, in Cary, N.C.
