Mavericks fall in 10th inning
Nebraska-Kearney scored twice in the bottom of the ninth inning today against Mesa State College and won it in the 10th, 4-3, to advance to the championship game of the NCAA Division II Central Region tournament in St. Cloud, Minn.
The Mavericks had a 3-1 lead going into the ninth, but closer Taylor Hamilton had control problems. After starter Tim Moore walked the leadoff man, Hamilton came in and got one out, but then gave up a base hit and walked the next batter to load the bases. He hit Daren Grace to score a run. Cody Lahman replaced Hamilton and hit the first man he faced, Brandon Buchanan, t tie the game at 3-3. Jordan Mitchelhill lifted a fly ball to left, but Ryan Shelton made the catch and threw Tim Urban out at the plate to preserve the tie.
Mesa State went out in order in the 10th and Lahman hit Brian Chritz with a pitch to lead off the bottom of the 10th. Derek Benham came in to pitch, and the Lopers bunted Chritz to second. Felix Segovia followed with the winning hit, a base hit to left-center, ending Mesa State’s season at 35-21.
Kearney plays Winona State Tuesday to advance to the Division II World Series, which begins Saturday in Cary, N.C.
