Mavericks rout Western Wyoming

Colorado Mesa won eight consecutive wrestling matches, including three by pin, to defeat Western Wyoming Community College 36-6 on Thursday night in Rock Springs, Wyo.

The Mavericks’ Daniel Salazar (141 pounds), Scott Verner (184) and Paco Retana (197) pinned their opponents. Jon Stelling (133), James Martinez (149) and Jessie Hoffschneider (165) won by major decision. Trevor Donarski (157) and Chester Granard (174) won decisions.

Western Wyoming won the first and last matches of the dual by decision at 125 and heavyweight.

The Mavericks (1-0) host the third annual Colorado Mesa Double Tree Open tournament at 9 a.m. Saturday at Brownson Arena.

Edmiston earns academic award

Colorado Mesa linebacker Jake Edmiston was selected to the Capital One Academic All-District football team.

The senior from Palisade has a 3.82 grade-point average in mathematics and statistics. He is the RMAC Academic Player of the Year and is a four-time RMAC All-Academic selection.

Edmiston leads all of NCAA Division II in total tackles (15.7 per game) and solo tackles (8.8 per game). He also has four sacks, two interceptions and four forced fumbles.

He was selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America and will be on the ballot for the Academic All-America team.

RMAC honors CMU diver Martin

Colorado Mesa men’s diver Brock Martin received the RMAC diver of the week award for the second consecutive week.

The senior from Evanston, Wyo., won the 1-meter and 3-meter dives last weekend against Colorado School of Mines in Golden. He scored 242.02 in the 1-meter dive and 286.12 in the 3-meter.

Martin, an All-American last season, already has qualified for the NCAA Division II national championships.
