Mavericks top Highlands in series opener

Colorado Mesa hit three home runs in an 11-6 victory over New Mexico Highlands in the four-game series opener at Suplizio Field.

Mitch Corwin hit a two-run home run then Kevin Mitchell had a solo blast that nearly cleared the scoreboard to give the Mavericks a 5-3 lead in the third inning. Jake Kluge had a three-run blast in the fifth for a 9-3 cushion.

That was enough for starting pitcher Nolan Snell. The senior right-hander limited Highlands to no earned runs on one hit and struck out 10 in seven innings for the victory.

Mesa (16-5, 10-1 RMAC) plays the Cowboys (14-9, 10-3 RMAC) in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday at Suplizio Field.
