Mavs drop series finale at UC-San Diego
Colorado Mesa University’s baseball team went 1-2 in its season-opening series at the University of California-San Diego, dropping Sunday’s third game of the series 8-4.
Nolan Snell took the loss, allowing three runs on seven hits in 3 1/3 innings for the No. 20 Mavericks.
Despite getting a dozen hits against the No. 23 Tritons, all of them were singles, and the Mavericks couldn’t string enough hits together to come up with a big inning. They scored two runs in the fifth inning, with Tamatoa Demello lifting a sacrifice fly to left to score Justin Rosales, who walked to lead off the inning. Rosales moved up on a bunt single by Austin Kaiser and an infield single by Nate Robertson.
Braden Box, who went 3 for 5, followed with an RBI single up the middle to cut the lead to 3-2. Robertson was thrown out trying to steal home on the back end of an attempted double steal.
San Diego got one run back on a solo home run by Richard Seigel in the bottom of the inning. Mesa added single runs in the sixth and seventh, but the Tritons also scored one in the bottom of the sixth, two in the seventh and one in the eighth. Of UC-San Diego’s 16 hits, six were for extra bases.
Kaiser and Robertson each went 3 for 4 for CMU, with Kaiser scoring two runs.
The Mavericks are off until Feb. 15, when they open a four-game series against Montana State-Billings at Suplizio Field.
