Mavs fall to Dixie State in basketball

Dixie State (Utah) College went on a 14-6 run in the second half Saturday night to pull away from the Colorado Mesa University men’s basketball team in a 77-65 win in the final game of the Dixie State Classic.

“They do that well,” said Andy Shantz, the Mavs’ associate head coach. “They’ve got that spurtability. ... I felt we were playing really hard but we ran into a team that can do that and it makes it hard to win.”

Dixie State held CMU center Colton Burgon to nine points, but the Mavs’ 6-foot-9 freshman backup, Ryan Stephan, hit a pair of 3-pointers and finished with nine points. Mike Melillo led the Mavs (1-1) with 18 points and Daniel Estes 10.

Mesa failed to convert at the free-throw line, making only seven of 17, and has nearly two weeks before its Clarion Inn Thanksgiving Classic, where it will face the Red Storm again.

7 p.m. in Golden. Mesa enters on a four-match winning streak, and Saturday got 12 kills from Kelly Regimbal and nine from Rachael Beaty, who also added two stuff blocks.

Mesa hit .273 against Highlands, with 44 kills and only 17 hitting errors. Megan Rush had 10 digs and Jordyn Moody 25 assists.
