Mavs get mat revenge vs. Western

Tyler Nelson, Nick Petersen and Jordan Passehl avenged losses earlier this season to lead the Colorado Mesa wrestling team to an 18-13 RMAC victory over 18th-ranked Western State on Thursday night in Gunnison.

The Mavericks (7-8, 2-2 RMAC) won six of the 10 matches to defeat the Mountaineers (5-4, 1-2 RMAC) for the second time this season and just the second time since the wresting program was reinstated six years ago.

“I’ve not been in a dual with that much energy since I’ve coached here (at Mesa),” CMU coach Chuck Pipher said. “In the past couple weeks (the Mountaineers) beat teams that beat us. They’ve been wrestling pretty well.”

Passehl rallied from a 6-0 deficit and scored a takedown with a tilt move in the final seconds for a 9-7 victory over Sam Mangum at 197 pounds.

Nelson defeated Matt Greene 3-2 at 133 and Petersen defeated Kyle Piatt, an Olathe High School graduate, 6-4 in overtime at 184.

Mesa’s James Martinez (141), Jon Gappmaier (157) and Dylan Granard (165) won decisions.

Western State’s Elliot Copeland escaped Zak Slotten’s grasp in the final seconds for a 5-4 victory at 174 pounds.

Thompson, a two-time state placer and the No. 4-ranked wrestler in Class 5A, won a 13-8 decision at 138 pounds over Kordell Bradshaw, who is ranked No. 6 in 4A and has placed third at state the past two seasons.

Another notable match was Montrose’s Marcus Velasquez, ranked No. 5, winning a 9-5 decision over No. 10 Gage Casey at 160 pounds.

Montrose forfeited five weight classes.

Palisade 58, Delta 15: Highlighted by a 15-second pin by Matt Pitton, Palisade cruised in a dual meet at Delta.

“The kids really wrestled well and they were a lot more aggressive on their feet and conditioned a little better,” Palisade coach Brian Rush said. “That’s where you want to be at this time of the year.”
