Mavs’ Popick makes two more All America teams
Jeff Popick is becoming everybody’s All-American.
The Colorado Mesa University senior outfielder made the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) NCAA Division II All-America teams, the organizations announced Wednesday.
“It’s nice, but it kind of sucks it couldn’t come with a World Series (appearance),” Popick said. “That would’ve made it sweeter.”
Popick made the ABCA first team and the NCBWA second team. He was selected to the Daktronics All-America first team last week. The Daktronics team is selected by the Sports Information Directors at NCAA Division II schools.
“Jeff had a great year,” CMU coach Chris Hanks said. “We had him since he was a freshman and saw him improve physically and mentally.
“He was able to achieve the numbers that get you recognized. He has a good eye, is patient at the plate and has strong hands.”
Popick hit .424 with 17 doubles, three triples and seven home runs this season. He led the team in RBI (65) and walks (31).
“The season started well,” Popick said. “I hit a slump, and Coach Hanks figured out my swing. I started seeing pitches better.
“I went back to my old fundamentals. I strayed away from it for a while.”
Popick is the first Mesa player to make the ABCA All-American team since Matt Bodenchuk in 2009 and the first to make the NCBWA All-American team since Matt Miller in 2008.
Popick’s career, though, likely will continue.
Hanks said he’s hearing Popick could be drafted anywhere from the 13th to 30th round and believes the Colorado Rockies are a good possibility.
“That would be story book, wouldn’t it?” Hanks said. “I can tell you from experience if Jeff had the opportunity to sign with the Rockies, he would likely end up here (in Grand Junction). That would be good for him. I hope the Rockies take him.”
He had a workout with the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday.
“It was good,” Popick said. “They had me run, throw and hit. There was a bunch of front-office people there.
“At first I was a little nervous, but I loosened up and had a good time with it. I’m just hoping I get a phone call.”
