Mavs ready for undefeated Cowboys

Trent DeBraga and the Colorado Mesa University football team are hoping to get back on track today with a game at New Mexico Highlands. The Mavericks turned the ball over six times last week in a loss to RMAC foe Nebraska-Kearney.

HISTORY: CMU leads series 24-10, including a 40-6 victory last season at Stocker Stadium.

GAME NOTES: Redshirt freshman quarterback Steve Romero is a game-time decision after spraining his right shoulder last week. Chris Henderson will likely start if Romero isn’t ready. Robert Felberg, who opened the season as the starting quarterback, is moving to wide receiver for the second consecutive season. He led the Mavericks with 23 catches for 233 yards and three touchdowns last season. ... Highlands’ win over Mines was its first over a nationally ranked team since 1998. The Cowboys have four returning starters and seven returning players on their two-deep chart from last season. Several of the new players are juniors and likely transferred from the College of the Siskiyous with head coach Eric Young, Mesa coach Joe Ramunno said. Campbell is a transfer from the University of Southern California. Highlands runs a spread offense and its defense pressured Mines’ QB Clay Garcia all day with different blitz packages, intercepting Garcia three times.
